SpaceX Says a Faulty Valve Triggered Crew Dragon Explosion

Investigators looking into the cause of the SpaceX Crew Dragon explosion back in April are now blaming a faulty valve for the anomaly, which allowed leaking fuel to come into contact with titanium. Officials with SpaceX say they’ve already got a fix, but it’s still not clear when the company will be able to resume flight tests. The incident happened on April 20, 2019 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida, as SpaceX was conducting static fire tests of its Crew Dragon capsule. The Crew Dragon used in the test was the same one used for the Demo-1 mission, which saw an uncrewed capsule visit the International Space Station back in March. SpaceX, in collaboration with NASA, is currently working toward an in-flight abort test of the vehicle and the much-anticipated Demo-2 mission, which will involve a crew of two NASA astronauts, Douglas Hurley and Robert Behnken. NASA, with the help of private partners, is striving to restore the United States’ ability to send astronauts to space, which it hasn’t been able to do independently since the retirement of the Space Shuttle Program in 2011. On the day of the accident, SpaceX managed to perform successful tests of the smaller, maneu...

New Instagram Features Beckon In Gen Z’s Moral Machine

Instagram product head Adam Mosseri at the F8 Facebook Developers conference on April 30, 2019 in San Jose, California. (Photo by Justin Sullivan/Getty Images) The promises of social media were ambitious and optimistic in equal measure. Even ten years ago most people who foresaw a socially mediated world expected the world to become more connected, more empathetic and more human as a result. Demographic markers like location and class were expected to be swept away as communities of interest replaced communities of place. Who could have forecast that social media in 2019 would come to be perceived as so negative and facing such a “techlash” that tools to avoid bullying and ways to hide ‘like counts’ would be introduced and welcomed with such relief? In July 2019, in the wake of mounting concern over the negative mental health effects of various social media, Instagram announced the launch of two new features available to users of the site. The first is called Restrict. It allows users to protect their accounts by restricting another user without their knowledge. Much like the concept of the mute button on Twitter, if you restrict someone on Instagram, on...

The advocates also assailed federal safety regulators for “rushing full speed ahead” to put self-driving cars on the road without adequate safeguards.  The optional drive-assist feature includes advanced adaptive cruise control and automated steering that allows the sedan to follow traffic and stay in its lane at speeds of up to 130 mph. Mercedes said late Thursday that it would take the ad out of rotation, saying it did “not want any potential confusion in the marketplace to detract from the giant step forward in vehicle safety the 2017 E class represents.” The Mercedes decision followed a letter to FTC Chairwoman Edith Ramirez from safety advocates who said the sedan did not meet the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s definitio...

Once worn to adorn the appendages of the ancient Egyptians, and latterly associated with Ibizan flower

Once worn to adorn the appendages of the ancient Egyptians, and latterly associated with Ibizan flower children and ladies of a questionable repute, the anklet has this year been rehabilitated by high fashion. Can you wear an anklet in the office this summer? Absolutely, yes. Summer goddesses can look to accessories brand Ancient Greek Sandals, whose anklets have taken a numismatic direction. Find triple-woven gold chains strung with coins embossed with horses, laurels, turtles and other symbols from Greek mythology and history (€70). London-based jewellery designer Rosh Mahtani, founder of Alighieri, believes an anklet is not just an accessory but a talisman: “I’m inspired by the universality of carrying amulets for courage and strength, across all cultures — from Peru to Morocco.” says Mahatni. “Growing up in Africa, I was surrounded by tribal traditions — objects worn around the ankles to ward away bad energy, for hunters and explorers alike.” Her bestselling anklet is the Woven Tapestry (£250), which looks like a golden fishing net and falls around the foot in little knotted waves. Italian brand The Attico bring Eighties glamour with horsebit-style chunky ring-links that fit...

Fujifilm Instax Mini LiPlay Review: A Cam and Printer In One

Fujifilm’s latest instant camera offers the best of both Instax worlds: It’s an instant camera and printer in one. Fujifilm’s latest instant camera offers the best of both Instax worlds: It’s an instant camera and printer in one. Despite the naysayers, print film refuses to die. Kodak resurrected one of it’s most popular films, Ektachrome, and Fujifilm has announced it will bring back Acros 100, a popular black-and-white film. It’s not just pros and artists that crave real-world prints though; instant-print cameras and printers have been piling up on our desk all year. Smaller Zink cameras and printers are among them, and they’re nipping at Fujifilm’s heels. The Instax Mini LiPlay is Fujifilm’s attempt to up its instant-photo game. Using the same credit-card-sized Instax film as previous releases, like our favorite Instax, the Mini 90, the LiPlay offers a more pocketable form factor. It also has a glass lens and is an impressive stand-alone mini printer. With an app, you can print photos from your smartphone. The much-touted ability to embed audio in your images using a QR code is less impressive, but I’ll get to that l...

And if you really master it, then it means you won’t need to work another day in your life! And if you never get to that point? Passive income ideas can still help you to live more comfortably within your means and supplement your income. In other words, passive income is very much “the dream.” True financial independence and freedom from work. Automation on a personal level! So how do you go about setting this up? Here are seven passive income ideas that will help you earn money while you sleep, and that anyone can get started with right away. How was...

Ceramic–metal composites for heat exchangers in concentrated solar power plants

In the meantime, to ensure continued support, we are displaying the site without styles and JavaScript. The efficiency of generating electricity from heat using concentrated solar power plants (which use mirrors or lenses to concentrate sunlight in order to drive heat engines, usually involving turbines) may be appreciably increased by operating with higher turbine inlet temperatures, but this would require improved heat exchanger materials. By operating turbines with inlet temperatures above 1,023 kelvin using closed-cycle high-pressure supercritical carbon dioxide (sCO2) recompression cycles, instead of using conventional (such as subcritical steam Rankine) cycles with inlet temperatures below 823 kelvin1,2,3, the relative heat-to-electricity conversion efficiency may be increased by more than 20 per cent. The resulting reduction in the cost of dispatchable electricity from concentrated solar power plants (coupled with thermal energy storage4,5,6) wou...
