No-deal Brexit: How will it affect holidays to Europe? Latest travel advice

With a month to go, here is everything you need to know about travel in the event of a no-deal Brexit By the end of this month, says the government, the United Kingdom will have left the European Union. The prime minister insists that he is working to secure an agreement, though there is no clear evidence of what that might be and how it would pass through the legislative process by 31 October. The Conservative government has pledged to bypass the so-called Benn Act, which is designed to stop the UK leaving the EU without a deal on Halloween. And an advertising campaign by the British government insists: “The UK will leave the EU on 31 October 2019.” The UK immediately becomes a “third country” and an entirely new regime of rules comes into play. British travellers who wish to visit the European Union must have a passport with a minimum of six months’ validity. Crucially, no passport is regarded as valid beyond 10 years after the date of issue. For nearly two decades until September 2018, UK adult passport holders who were renewing their travel documents were granted up to nine months’ credit for unexpired time. So a passport issued on 30 April 2010 could show an expiry date of...

Lawsuit filed over chicken slaughterhouse | Alexandria Times

The drama over the halal poultry butcher shop coming to Alexandria did not end when city council approved the business’ special use permit on March 26. Council granted the SUP by a vote of 5-2, with Vice Mayor Elizabeth Bennett-Parker and Councilor Amy Jackson voting against the permit. With the vote, council gave DC Poultry Market Corporation, a company also known as Saba Live Poultry that operates 14 locations nationwide, permission to house and butcher live poultry at 3225 Colvin St. About a month after the SUP approval, 10 businesses and residents filed a lawsuit against the City of Alexandria and the Alexandria City Council over the decision. The plaintiffs in the suit are 3221 Colvin Street Partnership, LLC; McClelland Press, Incorporated; National Capital Flag Company, Incorporated; Simply Doors & Closets, LLC; Fabulous Interior Designs, LLC; Wholesome Baked, LLC; Eugene Stein; Thomas and Diann Hohenthaner; Mary Ann Hollis; and WBC Alexandria, LLC. Several of the plaintiffs are businesses or businesses owners of companies located near the soon-to-be butcher shop. The butcher shop will also be in close proximity to various pet businesses, including Frolick Dogs, Dogtop...

D.C. Schools with the Most Stringent Dress Code Policies are Predominately Black, New Study Finds

A new study examining racist and sexist school dress codes found that Black schoolgirls are most impacted by the harmful policies — and are disproportionately dismissed from the classroom because of it. The report, published by the National Women’s Law Center earlier this month, found that over half of Washington, D.C., schools regulated the lengths of shorts and skirts, while 48 percent of schools banned head wraps, hats and other head coverings, some of which have cultural or religious significance. Researchers surveyed students and parents across 29 public and charter schools in the area, 21 percent of which banned tights or leggings and 55 percent that regulated the tightness, sizing, and fit of clothing. More telling was the fact that high schools with the most restrictive dress codes have a predominately Black student population, according to the study. Oftentimes, school grooming policies target clothes worn by female students, like spaghetti-strap tanks, crop tops and yoga pants. “Black girls are impacted the most by these harmful policies, and they’re the ones leading the movement for change,” Adaku Onyeka-Crawford, the Director of Educational Equity for NWLC, said in a...

Paint fumes can trigger asthma and cancer: Hidden dangers of decorating

Worried that the wallpaper in your front room is looking a bit tatty? Think the bathroom could do with a lick of paint? Well, think twice before you start redecorating. Chemicals from paint can cause serious health problems – both for those who apply them, whether they are professionals or DIY enthusiasts – and those who have to live in the house afterwards. There are also hidden dangers in apparently simple procedures such as removing old wallpaper and replastering. ‘People leap into decorating without giving a second thought to the risks involved,’ says Dr Richard Deacon, a Lancashire-based GP. ‘Decorating products need to be handled with care. You need to read the labels carefully. It’s actually a bit like handling medicine.’ Hidden dangers: Paints used in the home often contain harmful chemicals and compounds that are inhaled by the decorator when they dry PAINTING Paints used in the home contain potentially harmful chemicals such as solvents and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). ‘When the paint dries, these chemicals evaporate into the air where the hapless decorator can inhale their toxic fumes,’ explains Dr Deacon.  Paint falls into two categories: wa...
