Mauricio Galvan, creative director, Anomaly: “Back to School Essentials” by Sandy Hook Promise and BBDO New York really resonated with me. The gun-control conversation has reached a point of urgency, and at the same time, the absurdity of the arguments of those who oppose it has reached a new peak. It’s crazy to think that as surreal as this spot might be, it’s awfully close to the new reality we’re living in. I think the spot does a great job at pointing out warning signs that can lead to a shooting as well as waking up lawmakers opposed to gun-contr...

Barack Obama lists his favorite films and TV shows of 2019

As the year comes to an end, Barack Obama has listed his favorite films and TV shows of 2019. The list included a few Indie films, as well as films produced or distributed by Netflix. The Netflix shows that made the cut include “Marriage Story, The Irishman,” “Atlantics” and him and the former First Lady’s High Ground Productions documentary, American Factory. “American Factory” is one of the first films Barack and Michelle released under their multi-year deal with Netflix, which was announced in May 2018. The couple announced the venture in a promo for the documentary. “Higher Ground is a reflection of both of us,” Michelle said at the time. “So that means that our platform is gonna look a little bit like everything, just like the world is a little bit of everything.” Barack added, “We want people to be able to get outside of themselves, and experience and understand the lives of somebody else, which is what a good story does. It helps all of us feel some sort of solidarity with each other.” According to TMZ, the deal potentially includes “scripted series, unscripted series, docu-series, documentaries, and features.” Barack also included the following Indie films on his list of...

After the gifts are unwrapped and you’ve taken stock of your holiday haul, you might be

After the gifts are unwrapped and you’ve taken stock of your holiday haul, you might be wondering what accessories would pair best with all those new firearms. Guns.com has you covered with some of our top gear recommendations post-holiday season for those with cash to spend. Gifted a gun but it’s a little lackluster? Trick it out with an optic to increase the functionality of that new firearm. While scopes for rifles can help magnify targets, they also pull double duty providing markings that allow shooters to predict where shots will land once the trigger is pulled. A bonus if you’re routinely shooting low or high on your irons. On the other hand, red dots – which can fit onto rifles or pistols – are a non-magnifying means to accurately place shots on target. Red Dot optics display an aim point by way of an illuminated dot that, for some shooters, is easier to use than traditional iron sights. Optics run the gamut in terms of price, but a good rule of thumb is to opt for the highest-end model you can afford. Ammo is always a wise investment, so why not spend that holiday moo-lah on something you’ll actually use. When it comes to training ammo some of our favorite brands are Wi...

Ciaran Carson: a life shaped by Belfast’s ‘fractious epic’

Belfast-born writer Ciaran Carson, who died, aged 70, in October. Photograph: Eamonn McCabe/Popperfoto via Getty Images I’m writing this a day after returning from Ciaran Carson’s funeral in Belfast. He had a proper requiem Mass, though he wasn’t to my knowledge conventionally religious. It was accompanied by traditional Irish music, for flute, voice, fiddle: Last Night’s Fun, The Battle of Aughrim, The Mist Covered Mountain. The singer Pádraigín Ní Uallacháin sang a heartbreaking, acapella version of Úirchill an Chreagáin, or Creggan Graveyard, a vision of a promised land written by a poet in 18th-century Armagh, At the end of the service Paul Muldoon read, conversationally and carefully, Frost’s After Apple Picking. The cremation took place with more formal ritual, including an entire decade of the rosary, which took me back to my childhood kneeling on hard linoleum through nightly recitals of the prayer cycle. But then the whole congregation sang the traditional Scottish ballad The Parting Glass and there weren’t many dry eyes in the bleak crematorium chapel: The music and the poetry had been chosen by Ciaran in the months before he died. In that time, after he’d been told hi...

The widespread use of advanced polymer composites in the aerospace industry is leading to their increased use in other industries—most notably in the automotive industry, where weight reduction is of increasing importance. The widespread use of advanced polymer composites in the aerospace industry is leading to their increased use in other industries—most notably in the automotive industry, where weight reduction is of increasing importance. Composites are by nature entirely inhomogeneous; therefore, their physical properties change significantly over very small areas. In the case of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP)—the most widely used employed composite material—the physical properties of the fiber and the matrix are hugely different, as carbon fibers absorb all light wavelengths very efficiently and conduct heat very rapidly, whereas the epoxy matrix absorbs and conducts far less well. Research activity in this area is reviewed here; although some progress appears to have been made using specialized cutting and drilling techniques, there does not appear as of yet to be a clear solution as to how a laser can effectively cut this “worst-case” material at reali...

Bike riders love ‘new’ – new bikes, new kit and new products. But sometimes we find

Bike riders love ‘new’ – new bikes, new kit and new products. But sometimes we find a product that we like, that works for us, and we don’t really want to change things up, especially when it comes to personal aspects such as hydration.Asked to review another new hydration product not so long after I spent a month drinking a brand that I liked enough to take it to France on a recent trip for Bicycling Australia, I wondered…really? Can there be anything better than this? What could be different about PREPD? Then I spent some time chatting with Nathan Hocking and his team and learnt a thing or two about this new product. Namely, it isn’t a hydration drink, but actually a hydration enhancer. So that idea is very new. It meant I didn’t have to quit drinking the product I had decided was ‘my’ hydration drink. I could still have it, but add PREPD to my before and after exercise regime. The theory was that PREPD, which tastes like a very nice fruit smoothie (the mango and passionfruit Prime is taken six to 12 hours before training or racing while the equally as flavoursome strawberry and kiwi Recover is taken straight afterwards) works with other forms of hydration in my body (including...
